Provider Spotlight: Mediacom

1) Tell us about Mediacom, the services you provide and the region you serve.

For over 15 years, Mediacom, the nation’s 7th largest cable provider has built a successful track record as the local provider of choice for consumers seeking the fastest Internet service, value-added phone service and cable TV with the most free HD channels. Now, Mediacom brings the same level of innovation and technical expertise to businesses of all sizes with new choices in Internet, Phone and TV & Music services. Unlike other providers, we have the resources, local service support, expertise and technology to bring businesses exceptional digital services all from one company.  Mediacom serves over 22 states with a significant customer base in the Midwest and Southeast.  From our cable exclusive DOCSIS technology for small to medium sized businesses to our 100% fiber solutions with capacity of Gigabit and beyond, these speeds far surpass T1/ DSL technology.

2) Are you serving any interesting anchor institutions (like schools or hospitals) or business that are using your services to do innovative things?

Mediacom’s fiber network is already providing anchor institutions like schools, hospitals and municipalities nationwide with Gigabit networks.  Fiber allows for the bandwidth and connectivity that these verticals need in order to take advantage of advanced services that further their industry and more so economic development. These fiber broadband connections enable educators to conduct distance learning, core curriculum programs, online testing and the latest innovations in e-learning. Healthcare is able to meet and maintain HIPAA 5010 compliance, store and transmit electronic medical records in real time as well as conduct telemedicine between main hospitals and surrounding clinics. Mediacom's Gigabit+ speeds support local governments who need to manage their increasing needs for Internet communications and data management without committing public funds.

3) Are you doing any network upgrades or expansions? Tell us about any recent investments in infrastructure.

Long before many Internet providers were even offering service, Mediacom Communications built a fiber-optic network to provide communities with a new kind of Internet experience. Mediacom recognized the need to provide ultra-high speed broadband communications to support schools, hospitals, government offices, libraries and local businesses. Not in big urban centers, but in towns, rural areas and communities like those in IL. Mediacom has invested over $2.5 billion over the past 10 years to improve and expand our product delivery systems, and we're not done yet. Our network includes over 568,000 miles of brilliant fiber optics that spans from New York to San Francisco, Minnesota to Florida.  Mediacom manages the Gigabit+ network through a centralized Network Operations Center, providing 24 X 7 network monitoring with a 99.999% reliability.

4) What are some of your greatest obstacles in getting subscribers and/or upgrading your network.

This is simply an education process.  We strive to let businesses know that this division is not the cable residential service you are used to in your home. This is a different division and network with a fiber backbone that extends coast to coast and delivers the kind of service that a large Metro area would expect to receive, but now in rural areas. Mediacom’s network is proprietary and the infrastructure is already in place. In many cases, construction is minimal.   We invite cities to speak with Mediacom so we can leverage our private investment to bring them the broadband they need to drive economic growth & compete nationally.  A lot of our serviceable areas are misinformed & believe they need to build a fiber network or “Gig City” from the ground up. That doesn’t need to be the case. Cities do not have to use tax payer dollars to build the infrastructure.  But more importantly, yes anyone can build fiber, the problem comes into play when cities cannot maintain the infrastructure.  Mediacom has the expertise to manage and monitor such a sophisticated network.

5) How can we stay up to date on Mediacom's progress?
