Governor Quinn Announces Second Illinois Gigabit Communities Challenge Winner
AURORA – October 16, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today announced that OnLight Aurora is a recipient of an Illinois Gigabit Communities Challenge award, a statewide competition to establish ultra-high speed broadband networks across Illinois. The state is awarding $1 million in Illinois Jobs Now! capital funding to OnLight Aurora to help connect the city of Aurora’s fiber optic network to its education, business, and healthcare communities and accelerate economic growth and job creation.

CHICAGO- October 16, 2012 -- Governor Pat Quinn today announced the first winner of the Illinois Gigabit Communities Challenge, Gigabit Squared. The company, the City of Chicago, the University of Chicago, and Cook County, will receive $2 million in seed funding to jumpstart a fiber optic and wireless network in nine South Side Chicago neighborhoods. 

Making the Most of our Broadband Moment

Illinois, and Chicago along with it, has hit its moment for broadband. A series of initiatives have laid the foundation for private and public organizations to focus on high-speed infrastructure and broadband usage. We at Broadband Illinois recently announced 14 awardees for the Broadband Innovation Fund. And we look forward to the Illinois Gigabit Challenge rolling out. 

Spurring Innovation Through Broadband Usage and Adoption
Our organization aims to ensure Better Broadband and Better Lives for all Illinoisans. As part of our three-fold mission, we’ve submitted five rounds of broadband data and maps to the U.S. Department of Commerce, and our 10 regional eTeams have worked to address broadband access issues while promoting high-speed internet builds. Last week, we reached a new milestone with the launch of the Illinois Broadband Innovation Fund, a program seeking to enhance the internet’s usage and maximize its impact.

Spurring Innovation Through Illinois Gov. Quinn’s Gigabit Challenge
As the June 30, 2012, deadline for Governor Pat Quinn’s Illinois Gigabit Community Challenge approaches, contenders across the state are putting the finishing touches on plans to expand ultra high-speed internet throughout their communities.  This competition is the first of its kind for Illinois. The stakes are high: A total of $6 million in capital funding will be awarded to the most promising deployment projects.
