5th Data Submission Complete: Updated Information on Providers, Speeds Available

- More Illinoisans than ever have access to high-speed (broadband) Internet and carriers are continuing to expand their service areas, according to new data collected by the non-profit Partnership for a Connected Illinois. The organization, also known by its Broadband Illinois website, is responsible to the state and the federal government to collect and publish information from providers of high-speed Internet service. .

Co-op network hopes to bring broadband to more rural areas

A rural-electric transmission company is working toward a fiberoptic network that would reach schools, hospitals, businesses and homes in central Illinois with the kind of broadband speeds already available in more populated areas.
Jay Bartlett, president and CEO of Prairie Power Inc. in Jacksonville, said a group of rural-electric co-ops and telecommunications companies is working on establishment of a consortium to oversee the network.

- Next Generation 9-1-1 Systems utilize current communications technology to connect callers and their location information to the 9-1-1 professionals, who in turn dispatch needed services in emergency situations. These new systems offer lower costs, more flexibility in managing personnel and routing of calls, and a platform to support popular and emerging technologies, such as text messaging, telematics and video streaming. Such capabilities are not part of the existing basic 9-1-1 or Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) systems.

Broadband on schedule - Effort moves into Sterling and Fulton

Organizers say they are impressed with the progress of work crews laying in new fiber optic cable for the large-scale broadband project in this region, and that favorable weather in December and early January has allowed the effort to stay on schedule.
Recently, the Illinois Fiber Resources Group (iFiber) announced that the project had hit another major milestone, with work crews entering the city limits of Sterling and Fulton for the first time. All in all, the $69 million project is proceeding as planned, said Daniel Payette, this region’s outreach coordinator for the broadband effort.

By opening CTA Discover, the Chicago Transit Authority's new app, with a smart phone or a computer with Wi-Fi connection, users will instantly know their location — and all the buses and trains that are coming to the stops nearby.
