Broadband Innovation Fund to Award $500,000 to 14 Illinois Organizations

Projects will increase high-speed internet adoption and usage in creative ways, full list of recipients and applicants published on Broadband Illinois webpage

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois, October 9, 2012 – Tele-psychiatry in rural areas, a virtual history museum, and training for young entrepreneurs are among the 14 projects that have been selected as recipients for the first Illinois Broadband Innovation Fund.

Broadband Illinois named the selected Innovation Fund projects on a statewide webinar last week with more than 100 participants logging on to hear the announcement. Announced in August, the Broadband Innovation Fund prompted private, public and non-profit organizations to apply for $500,000 in funding to enhance the quality of life in their region using broadband technology.

Broadband Illinois received 113 proposals, requesting more than $7 million in funding, from all ten Illinois economic development regions by the September 18, 2012 deadline. Of the 14 funded organizations, more than $2 million in total partner funding will enhance these Illinois projects.

A full list of the 113 applicant organizations, a recording of the announcement webinar, presentation slides, and a new “Project Profile” page is available on www.broadbandillinois.org/innovation.

Later in October, a webinar series will allow broadband enthusiasts and others to “Meet the Awardees” and learn about the innovative projects funded by Broadband Illinois. Full details and registration information will be published in the coming weeks.
