recovery.gov logoThe Broadband Stimulus Program

On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed The American Reinvestment and  Recovery Act (ARRA) of 2009 [The Recovery Act] into law. The Recovery Act appropriated $787 billion to stimulate the U.S. economy. Of that total, $7.2 billion was appropriated for th e Broadband Stimulus program that is under the direction of the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and the Department  of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).  RUS and NTIA together have a required an expansion of broadband access into ‘unserved’ and ‘underserved’ communities across the United States.  These expansion projects will increase, create and sustain job opportunities, develop investment opportunities in technology and infrastructure, and provide long-lasting economic benefits and stability.  The result is the NTIA Broadband Technology Opportunities  Program (BTOP) and the RUS Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP).
